Stories of the Strange and Otherworldly

This Halloween season, join Robert Oakes, author, teacher, and storyteller, at The Abode in New Lebanon, NY, for a journey into the strange and supernatural. Participants in this day-long workshop will develop and deliver a personal story of an otherworldly experience. This could mean many things: a ghost encounter, a strange dream, a mystical vision, or a mysterious moment—something beyond the everyday. We’ll immerse ourselves in the natural beauty and contemplative peace of this spiritual retreat center and draw inspiration from the Shakers and Sufis who’ve lived and practiced there. There will be time for walks and contemplation, and of course, for writing. We’ll also gather to share our works in progress, receive feedback from our fellow storytellers, and listen to inspiring readings from accomplished writers and spiritual guides. After a delicious evening meal in the Dining Hall, we’ll gather one last time for a fireside story-share under the stars and trees (or in a candlelit room in the event of rain). Each participant will deliver their final story, and Robert will also tell ghost stories from the Shaker community that once lived at nearby Hancock Shaker Village, as well as right there on the grounds of The Abode and the Darrow School next door.
